CHAMELEONS 101

SEXUAL REPRODUCTION

Chameleons reproduce sexually. Most chameleons live their lives alone but males and females will tolerate each other during mating season. All chameleons lay eggs after a 3-6 week gestation period. Chameleons will normally lay there eggs in tunnels under the ground. Here is a wonderful website if you want to learn more about chameleons sexual activity

During the mating season, males try to impress females by swaying their heads, inflating their throats, enlarging their bodies, and showing off their brightest colors. A female may accept or reject the ego boosting male. If she rejects him, she might  run the opposite direction or she might face the male and hiss at him with an open mouth. She might even attack and bite him. These bites can seriously injure and sometimes kill the male.

PANTHER CHAMELEON LAYING EGGS

LAYING EGGS

All chameleons are egg-laying reptiles. In this video you saw a female Panther chameleon laying eggs. These eggs may not hold anything though unless they have been fertilized by sperm during sexual intercourse between a male and female chameleon. After a female chameleon lays her eggs she will dig them a borough  and put the eggs there until they hatch. When a chameleon is born it is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.
